What could it buy?

In Belgium a French centime was worth the same as a Belgian one. In 1844 this bought three to four kilos of rye bread (14 centimes a kilo). Around 1850 a labourer earned about 1.50 francs a day: three of these coins.

Approximate, in the prices and wages of the time.

The story

Silver 50 centimes from 1846, struck at Rouen under Louis-Philippe I. The portrait and laurel wreath can still be made out, but the mint mark B is one of the few legible details.
